🤖 My Honest Take on OpenClaw: Agentic AI with Real Potential — But Not for Everyone
After spending several weeks diving deep into OpenClaw, I’d like to share an honest experience that might be useful for anyone curious about this tool.
A Non-Linear Installation Journey:
✅ Windows → Easy to install, but approval prompts kept popping up every time OpenClaw tried to execute an action — and it ran noticeably slow (likely because I had AI running locally via Ollama minimax). If you’re looking for seamless automation, Windows can be quite frustrating with all those approval dialogs. (Or maybe there’s a config I’m missing — feel free to drop a comment!)
🔄 Moved to WSL2 → Impatient as I was, I switched to WSL2. This time, due to hardware resource constraints, I used Google Gemini 1.5 (free tier) as the brain. The difficulty level jumped significantly, but with AI assistance I eventually got it running. Basic functions worked — but only barely, as Gemini 1.5 struggled to handle more complex tasks reliably. On top of that, I hit a websocket issue when trying to integrate wacli. That pushed me to consider moving to Linux native.
🐧 Finally: Linux Native (Ubuntu under Hyper-V) → Installation experience was similar to WSL2 — definitely not plug-and-play. This time I decided to invest (no more free tier) and switched to Claude with the Haiku 4.5 model as the AI backbone. Lots of prerequisites had to be set up manually before the system was truly operational. But it worked — not perfectly, yet noticeably smarter than before. The upgrade in model quality made a real difference.
What’s Working So Far?
Several skills are running well: weather info, printing, webcam access, and snapshot capture. Progress so far has been satisfying.
What’s Still a Challenge?
Automated messaging via WhatsApp or Telegram — sending messages to contacts on my behalf — still doesn’t work. This is likely due to security restrictions on those platforms.
My Conclusion:
OpenClaw offers a genuinely compelling vision of Agentic AI. However, it requires at least intermediate IT skills to operate effectively. This is not a next-next-finish solution.
Looking ahead, OpenClaw has the potential to become a widely adopted Agentic AI platform — but only if the setup experience becomes significantly more user-friendly. Because no matter how powerful the technology is, mass adoption will only happen when the barrier to entry comes down.
Have you tried OpenClaw? I’d love to hear your experience!
